They are information tools that consist of devices downloaded to the user’s terminal equipment for the purpose of storing data that can be updated and retrieved by the entity responsible for their installation.

WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR

Generally, they are used to make the website’s operation more efficient and user-friendly, providing advantages in the provision of interactive services. Depending on the type of cookie, they can also be used for performance and behavior analysis purposes, as well as for managing advertising spaces. From a technical point of view, they allow websites to function more agilely and adapted to user preferences, such as storing language, country currency, or detecting the access device. They establish levels of protection and security that prevent or hinder cyberattacks against the site or its users. They allow media managers to know statistical data collected to improve the quality and experience of their services. They are used to optimize advertising shown to users, offering what best suits their interests.

REGULATORY FRAMEWORK

They are regulated by Article 22.2 of the Law on Information Society Services (Law 34/2002, of July 11, on information society services and electronic commerce) and affected by Organic Law 3/2018, of December 5, on the Protection of Personal Data and guarantee of digital rights, regulations that establish requirements to guarantee the privacy of internet users.

WHY ARE USERS INFORMED ABOUT COOKIES?

In compliance with current regulations, information is provided to guarantee user privacy so that they can configure the level of privacy they desire. Some cookies do not require user consent for their installation since they are exempt as they are strictly necessary to provide a service to the user or necessary only to allow communication between devices. Cookies serving any other purpose must have the user’s consent after detailed information about their purpose and characteristics, consent that is understood to be granted when browsing once the cookie policy is accepted.
